Eat Brown Rice to Boost Your Health at Every Meal
Flavourful and nutritious, brown rice has more health benefits than you think! And you can buy it at a special discounted price from FairPrice for the month of November 2017.

For those of us who've grown up eating white rice, brown rice may seem like a completely different grain altogether. However, with more people learning about the health benefits of brown rice, it’s appearing more often on dining tables and we can’t be happier. Compared to the white variant, which besides being a fluffy base for delicious dishes has no real nutrition to speak of, brown rice actually makes each meal better by offering a plethora of good-for-you properties.

Unlike white rice, which has been linked to weight gain and diabetes, consumption of brown rice actually produces the opposite effect. Brown rice is rich in fibre – five times more than white rice – which keeps you full for a longer period of time. Compared to white rice, brown rice is lower on the glycaemic index, which helps to control your sugar level. Brown rice also contains a higher amount of vitamins and minerals, plus two times more iron than white rice, according to the Health Promotion Board.

Studies by the Harvard School of Public Health have shown that swopping just one-third of a typical daily serving of white rice with brown rice could lower your risk of diabetes by 16 per cent. Once thought to be an elderly-related disease, diabetes is becoming more prevalent among the young ones in Singapore. One in nine Singaporeans has diabetes. Of those, 20 per cent are under age 40.
